(California Highway Patrol's MEP)....It went into effect Friday evening.

It will continue through just before mid-night Tuesday night. MEP is the California Highway Patrols Maximum Enforcement Period. It is implemented during most holidays. During the MEP the CHP enlists as many officers as possible to patrol the roadways to ensure motorists follow the traffic laws, making the roads as safe as possible. There was a bit of a break in the long holiday period. Several Federal businesses were open Monday, though most were open for a shorter than normal period. Some state and county businesses followed suit. Tuesday, everything will be closed for the actual Independence Day. Recreation areas will be open, including Sunbeam Lake and Weist Lake. The Aquatic Center in El Centro will be hosting a 60's pool party late Tuesday afternoon, from 4-8 pm. Admission is free.
