Interstate 10 east of Coachella has reopened.
Caltrans crews have completed repairs to the westbound section of the freeway that was undermined by last weekends heavy rains and flash floods. As of about 12:30 Friday afternoon , traffic has been moving with one lane open for each direction and reduced speeds. The affected area is near Desert Center , about 30 miles east of the city of Coachella. Big rigs were cleared to travel the highway about 2 hours later. The eastbound lanes , where a bridge washed out , will remain closed until repairs can be made and that may take years. Caltrans was able to reopen the major east-west highway in days rather than the months that had originally been suggested.
