(Calexico residents warned about foreign mosquitoes)…An emergency informational meeting was held this week.
The meeting was presented by the Imperial County Public Health Department. Environmental Services. It was held at the Housing Authority facility in Calexico. The public was told to be on the lookout, and be prepared to destroy mosquitoes that are not native to this area. They said the insect is most frequently found in tropical and sub-tropical areas, such as Central America, the Caribbean and Mexico. It described as a small, black and white insect. The mosquitoes have been found mostly in Baja California, but since 2013 they have been found in San Diego and Los Angeles Counties, as well. County officials say they have now also been found in the Calexico area South of Highway 98 and West of Cesar Chavez Boulevard. Environmental Health discovered the mosquitoes in a trap line set up along the border. Residents are advised to spray water holding areas and around homes. If the insect is suspected residents should call Vector Control. Pamphlets on the mosquitoes are being distributed to resident of the Border City.
