(District Attorney holds a public announcement)...It was held in front of the County Courthouse in El Centro.

Incumbent District Attorney Gilbert Otero announced he would not be seeking an 8th term in office. He was first elected as District Attorney in 1994. After 28 years in office, Otero said he was comfortable in his decision. Following the announcement, Otero introduced Mario Vela, a Depity District Attorney. Vela announced his candidacy for the position Otero was leaving. The Current D.A. said he supports Vela's candidacy. Vela joins two other announced candidates. Edgard Garcia, a current El Centro City Council person, and George Marques, a public defender, have also announced they would be running for the office of District Attorney. The seat is on the June Ballot. The official filing period begins in February.
