The California Department of Justice (DOJ) is investigating the officer-involved shooting in El Centro.

Assembly Bill 1506 requires the DOJ to investigate and independently review an officer-involved shooting. On Thursday, August 31, 2023, a suspect in a retail theft was shot and killed by El Centro Police after apparently attempting to assault an office with a brick. The suspect had refused to comply with demands to drop the brick and surrender. The DOJ's California Police Shooting Investigation Team initiated an investigation in accordance with AB 1506 mandates. The completed report will be turned over to DOJ's Special Prosecutions Section within the Criminal Law Division for independent review.
