A U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officer has been indicted on multiple federal charges.

Officer Leonard Darnell George was charged with accepting bribes to allow vehicles with drugs such as fentanyl and methamphetamine to pass from Mexico to the U.S. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, George, along with Mario Angel Gutierrez, Esteban Galvan and four unnamed defendants are charged with conspiracy to distribute controlled substances in Southern California and elsewhere. The defendants allegedly coordinated the smuggling of methamphetamine, fentanyl, cocaine, and heroin from Mexico. George is additionally charged with receiving bribes to pass the drugs through the border. Based on the charges, if convicted, George could face life in prison. A detention hearing is scheduled for July 6, 2023.
