The 2013 dove season opens on Sunday , September 1.
Stormy weather may make finding the elusive birds even more difficult. Heavy thunderstorm activity last weekend and the forecast of more rain in the coming weekend may cause the birds to hunker down in their roosts. Muddy fields and county roads may also slow down hunters.
The Department of Fish and Wildlife has changed regulations on the take of the Eurasian or collard doves that have invaded much of Southern California. Hunters may now take the pigeon-sized doves all year and there is no limit on the take. The state agency took the steps on a trial basis in Imperial County to limit the spread of the invasive birds and protect the native dove populations.
