(Oscar Ortiz Martinez sentenced)…The 33 year old was sentenced to 12 years in Federal Prison.
The former Customs and Border Protection agent was arrest in 2010 and charged with taking bribes to allow loads of illegal drugs to cross the border. He was assigned to the Calexico Port of Entry. Ortiz Martinez and his co-defendant Victor Manuel Silva were arrested in a sting operation. Federal agents went undercover to set up a deal. The two had agreed to be paid $30,000 in exchange for allowing a load of illegal drugs to cross into the United States. When they showed up for the pay-off, they were busted. The trial in San Diego Federal court included audio and video of the two making the deal and collecting the bribe. The former CBP officer was convicted of bribery and conspiracy to import drugs. Ortiz Martinez began working at the Calexico port and wasted little time in taking bribes. In June, two former Border Patrol agents, brothers Raul and Fidel Villareal, were sentenced to 35 and 30 years after they were convicted for running a human smuggling ring.
