(County Board supports Immigration Reform)….The Supervisors discussed the issue Tuesday.
They had put off the discussion until there was positive news on a proposed Immigration Bill. The positive news the Supervisors had turned negative by the time they adjourned their weekly meeting, however. During the meeting the Board voted to send letters to Senators Diane Feinstein and Barbara Boxer, declaring their support of an immigration bill. The letter also included a list of what the County Board wanted in the bill. That list included funding for Border Infrastructure, including a new Calexico Land Port, increased border security, a Southwest Border Region Prosecution initiative, increased funding for Operation Stonegarden, and a provision allowing Illegal Immigrants to qualify for subsidized healthcare. The Senate may have to develop its own Immigration Bill, after House Speaker John Boehner announced he saw reason in bringing the immigration bill to the floor until there are a majority of republicans in support. The Supervisors, and others, had hoped a vote on the Bill would come by the end of the year.
