(2014 Crop and Livestock Report)…It was submitted to the County Board of Supervisors.
The Imperial County Agricultural Crop and Livestock report was presented by Ag Commissioner Connie Valenzuela. The report indicates Gross Production for 2014 valued at $1.8 billion. That is a decrease of 13.89% from the previous report. The 2013 gross value was $2.1 billion. Valenzuela says the main reasons for the decrease include a reduction in livestock production and market prices, fewer and smaller replacement cattle, and warm winter weather that affected the winter vegetable harvest with an earlier product at lower market prices. The only increase in gross value was in field crops. Cattle was again ranked as the number 1 commodity in Imperial County, despite a drop in total gross value of over 37%. In 2014 total harvested acres decreased by 3.87%. Bermuda grass showed the largest decrease in harvested acres, down 38%. The report is being submitted to the state Agriculture Department.
