(Undercover operation pays off)…It resulted in a major drug bust.
Homeland Security investigations conducted the undercover operation. It resulted in the discovery of a major drug tunnel. The operation was launched Wednesday and within hours they discovered and shut down the tunnel between Tijuana and San Diego. The tunnel contained ventilation, lighting and a rail system to transport loads of wrapped marijuana. Between the US agents and Mexican authorities, 22 suspects were arrested and 12 tons of marijuana was seized. They suspect the tunnel was new, and the loads of marijuana seized were the first to move through the illegal conveyance. Officials say the tunnel was a half mile long, one of the largest found in recent years. Several drug tunnels have been found between San Diego and Arizona. Most constructed by the Sinaloa Cartel headed by Joaquin Guzman, also known as El Chapo. Homeland Security says the investigation is continuing and no further information would be released at this time.
