(Westmorland man arrested)…It was reported late last week.
Fred Beltran, Westmorland Police Chief, says his department received the call at around 7:00 pm. An officer responded to the family fight call in the 200 Block pf North Center Street. The Chief says when the officer arrived he was confronted by the suspect, later identified as Jesus Mendoza. The suspect was displaying an aggressive demeanor and would not keep his distance from the officer, after the officer gave him commands to do so. The Chief says Mendoza then attacked the officer with a brick, striking him in the head. The officer struggled with the suspect, who managed to get a hold of the officers finger and was attempting to bite it off. The investigation determined that Mendoza was also trying to take the officer’s weapon during the struggle. After struggling for about 7 minutes, the officer was able to subdue the suspect and place him handcuffs. Both Mendoza and the officer were transported to a local hospital for treatment of their injuries. Mendoza was booked into County Jail, charged with attempted murder on a police officer, attempted mayhem and various other charges.
