(USGS shows support for early warning system)….The support comes in the form of a $4 million award.
The US Geological Survey awarded the funds this week to four Universities. Awards went to the California Institute of Technology, University of California, Berkley, University of Oregon, and the University of Washington. The funds are to support transitioning the “Shake Alert” earthquake early warning system toward a production stage. They say a functioning early warning system can give people a precious few seconds to stop what they are doing and take precautions before the severe shaking waves from an earthquake arrive. The USGS has also spent about $1 million to purchase new sensor equipment for the Earthquake Early Warning system. The funds were approved by Congress earlier this year. In Imperial County, the Office of Emergency Services is connected to an early warning system. The system gives a 30 to 60 second warning of an impending earthquake magnitude 5 and above.
