(Sycuan updates compact with the state)….The Governor announced signing the compact Thursday.
The original compact was signed between the state and the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation in 1999. Sycuan wanted the updated compact to upgrade to a class 3 casino. The state agreed, after the Tribal leaders agreed to pay more to the surrounding communities, to pay for security, infrastructure upgrades and donate funds to surrounding tribes that do not have a casino. In the meantime, Calexico and the Manzanita Band of the Kumeyaay Nation are still wanted for the Department of Indian Affairs to approve their request for an off reservation Casino. If that request is ever approved, they propose to build a casino near the Calexico City Limits. It has been years since the request was submitted to the Department of Interior. The good news for the casino backers is that the request has not been denied.
