Embattled Calexico City Councilman David Romero has resigned.

Romero , Mayor Pro-Tem of Calexico , has been charged by the U. S. Attorney's Office with corruption in connection with accepting bribes to facilitate a city permit for a cannabis dispensary in the border city. He submitted a letter of resignation Monday morning giving up his seat on the Council immediately. In the letter Romero said , " upon everything that has unfolded in the last two weeks , I strongly believe this is the wisest and most effective decision for the benefit of our city and it's citizens." The Calexico City Council will now have to decide whether to appoint a replacement or hold a special election. Romero's term of office was through November of 2022.
