(Al Kalin has been named Farmer of the Year)…The closely guarded secret was revealed Thursday night.
Every year the Imperial County Farm Bureau refuses to reveal their Farmer of the Year until it is announced at the Jim Kuhn Memorial Farmer of the Year, Annual Farm Bureau Members meeting. The event was held Thursday evening at the Stockman’s Club in Brawley. Kalin is a north-county farmer, who has become a kind of brain trust for the local Farm Bureau. Mark McBroom, Former Imperial County Farm Bureau President, said Kalin is a consummate sage of the Farm Bureau. Kalin was instrumental in developing the local TMDL Program, has turned himself into a Salton Sea historian and an expert on issues surrounding the Salton Sea. He currently serves on the Imperial Irrigation District’s Water Conservation Advisory Committee. Over 300 attended the event, which also featured Jamie Johnson, the 2nd Vice-President of the California Farm Bureau Federation as the Guest Speaker.
