County to donate to Memorial and issues a challenge

(Joaquin Antonio Villegas has chosen a very ambitious project)…Those were the words of local Scout Leaders.

Villegas is a 17-year-old Central Union High School Student, member of the Spartan Jazz Band. He is also a Scout. In fact he is an Eagle Scout Candidate. To become an Eagle Scout, he must complete a Leadership Service Project. He chose an Imperial County Veteran’s Memorial. He began raising funds for the project when he was 15. Villegas says he would like to start construction on the project by the first of the year. The project costs money. He estimates about $100,000. He had raised about $40,000, before he began seeking public support. He is making the rounds to service clubs and local governmental entities. The City of Imperial has donated $10,000, and challenged the County and other cities around the county to meet or better their donation. The Imperial City Council also said they would provide the maintenance and security for the Memorial once it is constructed. The County Board of Supervisors directed their staff to find a way to match or better the Imperial donation, and also challenged the Cities and Imperial Irrigation District to donate. The Memorial will be constructed at the entrance of the County Airport, off Highway 86, and will be recognizable from all sides, as well as from the air.
