Salton Sea mitigation added to Water Bond

(Assemblyman’s efforts pay-off)…Assemblyman Manuel Perez has been lobbying to include Salton Sea funding in the 2014 Water Bond.

Earlier in the month Perez testified before the Committee on Water, Parks, and Wildlife. The Assemblyman has announced that his efforts have paid off. He said amendments have been made to the 2014 Water Bond legislation to include dedicated funding for the Salton Sea. Perez, who represents Imperial County and part of the Coachella Valley, said his position has been that the State cannot over look its commitments to the Salton Sea mitigation, that they must be built into the bond. The state had made the mitigation commitment under the 2003 signing of the Quantification Settlement Agreement. Perez says the amendments to the Water Bond would designate $500 million to fulfill commitments in three water dispute settlements; the San Joaquin River Restoration, and the Klamath Hydroelectric Settlement Agreement, as well as the Salton Sea mitigation.
