(What is the hold-up on the proposed Calexico Casino?)…It has been in the planning stages since 2005.
The Manzanita Band of the Kumeyaay Indians have requested 60 acres of land in Calexico be placed in trust, to allow them to construct a Casino and Hotel in Calexico. Original plans are for the 220,000 square foot Casino to include 2,000 slot machines and a 260-room Hotel. The controversy is that the Casino would be located 100 miles from the tribe’s reservation. The Environmental Impact Statement was published in October 2011, but the Bureau of Indian Affairs has not issued a record of Decision on the EIS. Officials say they expect the BIA to issue the Record of Decision, but they do not know when that will happen. When it does, the entire package will go to Governor Brown’s office. There may be further delay there. There is currently a statewide debate as to the community benefit of off reservation Casinos. Locally, the City of Calexico, County Board of Supervisors and others have endorsed the project, saying it would have an enormous economic impact on the community.
