The City of Brawley has reached a deal to settle liability issues with the Brawley Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The Colorado River Basin Regional Quality Control Board had issued a complaint against the Brawley Wastewater Treatment Plant in February of this year alleging violations in the Waste Discharge Requirments. The Water Quality Control Board had propsed a civil liablity assessment of $1,734,778 for the violations. The settlement reached between the city and the board means the city will pay a cash sttlement of $1,000,000. The money will be payable over a three year period. The settlement will be voted on by the Water Control Board at a September 19, 2013 meeting.
According to the City of Brawley , the violations of concern are historic in nature , dating back more than 10 years. The City has since updated it's pretreatment program and enacted changes to the City Sewer Ordinance that fully regulate any and all industrial users within the city limits. Mayor Sam Couchman said , " At this point , it is critical that the City close this chapter in it's history and move forward on a path of compliance."
