(Gold Cross Ambulance employees on strike)….They officially went on strike at 12:01 Sunday morning.
Phil Farias says after six months of negotiations, the members of Teamsters Local Union 542 who work for Gold Cross Ambulance in Imperial County went out on strike. Farias is the President of the Teamsters Local in San Diego. The Union says they hope the labor action bring Gold Cross officials back to the bargaining table. A total of 60 local Gold Cross employees went on strike. The Union says the employees are demanding a pay increase, safe equipment and protected benefits. Gold Cross officials say they pulled their final offer off the table because of suspected foul play. They say it is suspected somebody has tampered with some emergency vehicles before going on strike. They say a foreign substance was found in the radiator of one vehicle and paper napkins were found stuffed in air conditioning vents. The County says residents are not at risk because of the strike. They say contingencies are in place to ensure normal ambulance response times to emergency calls.
