DNA results being sought

(A positive I.D. could be weeks away)….The autopsy last week was inconclusive.

The body was discovered in the All American Canal last week, near the New River. At the time Chief Deputy Coroner Sergeant Thomas Garcia said his office was confident the body was that of 18-year-old Damian Placencia of Calexico. He said, however, his department would go through the normal procedure to determine an exact identification and cause of death. Deputy Coroner Rodolfo Barron says that autopsy was not able to positively identify the body. He said DNA tests have been sent off to a laboratory, and results could be weeks to be returned. The body was discovered by Placencia’s father, about two and a half miles from where the 18 year old reportedly was last seen being pulled under. Placencia had reportedly been swimming in the Canal last month when he was apparently pulled under water by the strong currents. Since then the Imperial Irrigation District, Sheriff’s Dive Team and others have been searching for the body to surface.
