(Bi-partisan bill to rename Brawley Post Office)…It has been introduced by Congressman Juan Vargas.

If approved, the Bill would rename the Brawley Post Office the “Helen Fabela Chavez Memorial Post Office Building.” Vargas says his bill would honor American labor activist Helen Fabela Chavez, who was born and raised in the Imperial Valley. Chavez worked tirelessly to push the labor movement forward, while supporting her growing family. She was the wife of Cesar Chavez and an active participant in the creation of the United Farm Workers, serving as Treasurer-manager of the UFW credit union. She was the mother of 8, a Southern California Farm Worker and breadwinner for her family. Vargas said for far too long, women, especially women of color, have gone unrecognized for their tremendous sacrifice and courageous leadership throughout the nation’s history. He said Helen Fabela Chavez was one of these women.
