A van going westbound in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 8 collided with an SUV Monday night.

According to the California Highway Patrol , a Ford Transit van driven by a 75-year old woman from South Carolina was originally seen driving the wrong way near State Route 115. CHP officers attempted to get the driver's attention but were unable to do so. As the van passed Dogwood Road it collided with a Honda Pilot being driven by a 30-year old Calexico woman. The head on collision resulted in major head trauma to both drivers and both died at the scene of the accident. According to the Highway Patrol , both drivers were wearing seatbelts and driving under the influence does not appear to be a factor in the collision. The accident remains under investigation. The identities of both drivers are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
