(Environmentalist group is still trying)…They want to get the flat tailed horned lizard on the endangered list.
They have been trying for decades. The Center for Biological Diversity says the lizard population is declining and current population management efforts are inadequate. They want the lizard listed on the Federal Endangered Species list. This would hamper growth in the desert and curtail off-road activities. In 2011 the US Fish and Wildlife Service determined the flat tailed horned lizard did not need protection. A few years ago the Center tried to get desert lands closed to off road activity to protect the Pierce Milk-Vetch plant. It was later determined the plant was not endanger and the weed actually thrived in the desert.
