The Imperial Irrigation District set a new record for peak electricity demand in 2018 yesterday.

Usage is expected to be even higher today. According to the District , energy demand on the IID system reached 1,052 megawatts between 4 -5 p.m. Monday and power planners are anticipating usage to be even higher today. " IID has adequate power supplies to meet demand , but asks consumers to conserve energy to ease the strain on the energy grid and maintain reliability of the system , " according to Henry Martinez , manager of IID's Energy Department. The National Weather Service has extended their Excessive Heat Warning through Thursday night with temperatures to remain near 118 degrees. Some cooling is expected by the weekend as moisture will move back into the Southwest.
