Crews from multiple agencies are battling a wildfire in eastern San Diego County.

The fire , named the West Fire , was reported late Friday morning along Interstate 8 and Willows Road. As many as 12 structures have been reported destroyed by the fire that also disrupted cellphone and internet service in the Imperial Valley when power was lost at communications facilities in the San Diego County community of Alpine. Over 400 acres were charred as of 4:30 p.m. and Cal Fire reported 5% containment. Interstate 8 remained open but eastbound traffic was reported to be backed up. Several neighborhoods in Alpine were ordered evacuated because of the fast moving fire. Fire personnel were dealing with temperatures in the 108 degree range.

Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. declared a State of Emergency in San Diego County due to the West Fire. In the declaration the Governor said that " due to the effects of the West Fire , which has destroyed homes , threatened critical infrastructure and caused the evacuation of residents " a State of Emergency exists.
