(Very high levels of PM 2.5 along the Border)….PM 2.5 is a finite particulate matter.
Calexico is the region in Imperial County with the highest levels of PM 2.5. That is mainly because the finite particulate matter is created in part from vehicle emissions. The long lines to cross the border and traffic congestion in Mexicali result in the high levels of PM 2.5 in Calexico. Unhealthy air quality was registered over night at the Ethel Street monitoring station. The Air Pollution Control District issued an Air Alert at 2:00 am Wednesday morning. By mid morning Wednesday the Air Quality condition was listed as unhealthy for sensitive groups. The sensitive groups include those with heart or respiratory disease, the elderly and young children. The recommendation is that those in the sensitive groups stay in doors as much as possible and avoid physical exertion until the levels of the particulate matter are reduced.
