(Foul air for over a week)…High levels of PM 2.5 have been registered at the border for over a week.
The Ethel Street monitoring station in Calexico has registered levels, reaching air quality conditions of Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups to Unhealthy for everyone. The atmosphere may be partially to blame. PM 2.5 is a finite Particulate matter, created mainly from vehicle emissions. The long lines to come across the border and increased traffic congestion in Mexicali are to blame for the high levels of PM 2.5. Why the pollution is hanging around so long could be atmospheric. Officials have said inversion layers are sometimes to blame for holding the foul air down. It will not allow the air pollution to escape until the inversion layer lifts. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends that those sensitive to air pollution reduce or eliminate heavy exertion and stay indoors as much as possible until the levels of PM 2.5 lower to at least moderate air quality conditions.
