CBP seizes cash headed to Mexico

(Over $800,000 found in a spare tire)….The cash was headed to Mexico.

On November 12th Customs and Border Protection Officers were working the southbound lanes at the Downtown Calexico Port of Entry. Officers targeted a 2008 Chevy Silverado. At around 4:30 in the afternoon the pick-up was referred for a more detailed inspection. A detector dog alerted to the vehicle. Using the port’s imaging system, officers discovered 8 wrapped packages of US Currency hidden in the vehicle’s spare tire. The packages totaled $814,595. The CBP says it is a Federal offense not to declare currency or monetary instruments totaling more than $10,000 to a CBP officer upon entry or exit from the US or to conceal it with intent to evade reporting requirements. Failure to declare may result in seizure of the currency and/or arrest.
