(It was no surprise),,,And, it was not unanimous.
The Calexico City Council appointed a new Police Chief. During a somewhat contentious City Council meeting Tuesday, the Council voted 3-2 to appoint Pompeo Tabarez as the new Police Chief. It had long been rumored that Tabarez would be appointed to the position left by the retirement of Chief Kim Nuehjar. Calexico Mayor Maritza Hurtado and Councilman John Moreno voted against the appointment. Moreno called for the process to be re-done, with several recommended medications. Tabarez is a former Sergeant with the Imperial County Sheriff’s Office. His appointment is contingent on pre-employment requirements, including a background check. Lt. Gonzalo Gerardo has served as interim Police Chief since Nuehjar left the position. He will continue as the interim chief until Tabarez is officially hired.
