U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers seized almost two tons of marijuana at the Calexico East port of entry.
The incident occurred at about 7:40 p.m. when a tractor-trailer rig entered the cargo facility carry a load manifested at plastic pallets. The vehicle was rferred to secondary inspection where the ports imaging system detected anomalies in the pallets. A canine team screened the vehicle and the detector dog alerted to what turned out to be 240 wrapped packages of marijuana hiden inside the hollowed-out pallets. Officials estimate the street value of the marijuana at $1.5 million. The driver of the big rig , a 43-year old Mexicali man, a Mexican citizen, was arrested.
