(Pursuit ends in injuries)…One of the injuries was reportedly serious.

The pursuit began late Tuesday morning. A Mazda drove up to the Interstate 8 checkpoint near Sunrise Highway. The vehicle was sent to the secondary inspection area, but instead fled. Border Patrol agent gave chase. About 8 miles into the westbound pursuit, the Mazda swerved across the I-8 lanes, onto the dirt embankment, where it struck a wooden post. The vehicle rolled down the embankment, coming to rest on its wheels. The vehicle had three illegal immigrants in the trunk. One of them was ejected as the vehicle rolled. That person was airlifted to Sharp Memorial Hospital suffering major injuries. The other two were also injured. They were taken to the hospital by ambulance. The 18-year-old driver, a US citizen, was not injured. He was arrested for Human Smuggling.
