The California Highway Patrol is investigating a single-vehicle accident that occurred at about 10:19 Tuesday morning.

According to the CHP , a 2006 Subaru was westbound on Interstate 8 just east of 4th Street in El Centro when the driver apparently made an unsafe lane change  , ran off the roadway into the center divider and collided with the oleander bushes causing the Subaru to overturn and catch fire.  The driver , 40-year old Travis H. Calvin of El Centro , was trapped inside the vehicle but witnesses were able to pull out of the wreckage and put out the fire. Calvin received major injuries in the collision and was airlifted from the scene to Desert Regional Medical Center. Interstate 8 was closed for approximately 30 minutes for the REACH helicopter to land. The accident remains under investigation.
